A Calligraphic Interpretation
Left: Side by side lyrics and stone fireplace.
The background is a layered multi-step plaster, its execution nuanced yet consistent.
Right from top to bottom: Jorge, Nick and Jen working on the different stages of the mural/script with pastels, painting and matte sealer.
We just finished painting a stunning living room on the North Shore, overlooking Lake Michigan with a clear, magnificent view of the lake.
A lake that could easily pass as a sea.
The homeowner told us of his fondness for Charles Trenet’s famous song “La Mer” and with the interior designer we envisioned one of our studio’s calligraphic creations encompassing the entire room with the lyrics.
The palette was very subtle and restrained, meant to compliment the stone colors throughout the home, with occasional accents of umber, ochre and gray-blue strokes.
There was a multi-step plaster background applied that provided a light texture to the script and a warm cast to the room.
The result, being enveloped in a diaphanous rendition of the song, is a one-of-a-kind art piece, while at the same time a textural and subtle backdrop for the furnishings to come in the room.
